This study aimed to analyze the government subsidy policy in Algeria and its role as a mechanism for trade balance adjustment during the period from 2000 to 2024, by examining the structure of explicit and implicit subsidies, measuring their impact on the general budget deficit and trade balance, while proposing solutions to reform the subsidy system. The study adopted the descriptive-analytical and quantitative approaches, analyzing official data issued by the Ministry of Finance and the National Statistics Office. The study concluded that the current subsidy policy in Algeria does not constitute an effective mechanism for trade balance adjustment, but rather contributes to worsening its deficit by inflating consumption imports and weakening the competitiveness of non-oil exports. Moreover, the weak value added of productive sectors makes the financing of subsidies dependent on volatile hydrocarbon revenues, which deepens external trade dependence. The study recommended a gradual transition from generalized subsidies to targeted cash transfers, along with tax system reform and strengthening national production, in order to transform subsidy policy from a burden on the budget and foreign trade into a supporting mechanism for achieving fiscal and trade discipline
