Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the impact of advertising clutter on information-seeking behavior on the social media platform Facebook. The research problem centered around the general question: How does advertising clutter affect information-seeking behavior among Facebook users, and what role do demographic variables play in this relationship? The study employed an electronic questionnaire as the primary data collection tool, following a descriptive analytical methodology that combines both quantitative and qualitative approaches. A sample of 100 Facebook users was randomly selected, taking into account the diversity of demographic characteristics in terms of gender, age, and educational level. Data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26, where a series of statistical tests were conducted including variance analysis, multiple regression, and correlation coefficients.
The results revealed a strong inverse relationship between the perception of advertising clutter and trust in information provided on Facebook, as advertising clutter drives users to seek alternative information sources outside the platform. The findings also showed the impact of advertising clutter on information-seeking methods, including the use of ad blockers and verification of information across multiple sources. The study further confirmed that the impact of advertising clutter on information-seeking behavior varies according to users' demographic variables, with women, younger age groups, and higher educational levels showing more active responses in dealing with advertising clutter.
The study presented several recommendations, most importantly: the need to reconsider the economic models of social media platforms, increase transparency about targeted advertising, empower users to control their advertising experience, and enhance digital media literacy.
