Abstract

This study aims to investigate the approaches of historical writing in the Islamic West and to trace the development of its methods and trends, while identifying the various factors that contributed to this development. The interest shown by princes and caliphs in the movement of historical documentation played a clear role in the emergence of historians who contributed to shaping historical thought in Al-Andalus and the Islamic Maghreb. Over time, historical writing in the Islamic West gradually moved away from its dependence on the Eastern Islamic world, and from the third Hijri century onward it began to exhibit a degree of methodological and thematic independence. The study adopts a comparative methodological approach between two prominent figures: Ibn Ḥayyān al-Qurṭubī, representing the Andalusian school, and Abū Zakariyyā al-Wārjilānī, representing the Ibāḍī school. Their methodologies are analyzed in terms of event organization, source selection, and the construction of historical narrative, with particular attention to the influence of ideological and geographical backgrounds on shaping their perspectives. The findings indicate that similarities between the two schools are more prominent than elements of difference. However, Ibn Ḥayyān is distinguished by the breadth of his historical material and the diversity of his sources, whereas al-Wārjilānī remained confined within the Ibāḍī doctrinal framework, which limited the scope of his narrative in comparison with the broader and more comprehensive narrative presented by Ibn Ḥayyān.
