Abstract

Abstract This study aims to analyze the impact of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on international competitiveness in Algeria during the period from 1980 to 2020, by examining its effect on some macroeconomic variables, namely exports, the real exchange rate, and economic growth, considering them as sub-indicators related to international competitiveness. To achieve the study’s objectives, a descriptive analytical approach was adopted to examine theoretical concepts related to FDI and international competitiveness, in addition to a statistical approach to analyze the relationship between the study variables. The study also relied on data from the Algerian economy as a sample for the period (1980-2020), based on a set of statistics and reports issued by the World Bank, the Arab Monetary Fund, the Ministry of Finance, and the Arab Planning Institute. A set of statistical and econometric tools were used to analyze the data, relying on statistical and econometric analysis programs to measure the impact of FDI on the study variables. The study concluded that FDI has an impact on the study variables, namely exports, the exchange rate, and economic growth. The results also showed that the Algerian economy still faces challenges related to the investment climate, weak infrastructure, and reliance on the hydrocarbon sector, which limits its competitiveness. Therefore, the study recommends adopting economic and institutional reforms to improve the business environment and attract more foreign direct investments to enhance the competitiveness of the Algerian economy. Keywords: Foreign Direct Investment, International Competitiveness, Economic Growth, The Real Exchange Rate.
